Moving out of a Panama City building: permits, lifts and time slots
Almost every building in the city requires the service lift to be booked and only allows moves on set days and hours. How it is arranged and what happens when it was not.
In Panama City most moves do not get complicated by the truck or the traffic. They get complicated at the building entrance, and almost always for the same reason: nobody told the administration in time.
What a typical building asks for
Rules vary from one building to another, but the pattern repeats:
- A booking for the service lift, with a specific day and time slot. The residents’ lift is not used for moves, and in many buildings it is expressly forbidden.
- Permitted days and hours. Usually Monday to Saturday during working hours. Many buildings do not allow moves on Sundays or public holidays, and plenty stop at midday on Saturday.
- A refundable deposit covering damage to common areas, returned after the exit inspection.
- Advance notice, anywhere from 48 hours to a week depending on the building.
- Details of the moving company, and in some cases a public liability policy.
- Protection for the lift and corridors, sometimes supplied by the administration and sometimes by the mover.
Two buildings, not one
This is the most common mistake: the exit permit gets arranged and the arrival one is forgotten. The result is a loaded truck waiting outside the new building while somebody tries to reach an administrator on a Saturday.
Both permits are arranged at once and with the same lead time. We handle them with both administrations before a single box moves, precisely because the part that fails is rarely the part you are watching.
Measure before, not on moving day
A service lift has limits that are not negotiable once the truck arrives:
- Door height decides whether a large mattress goes in upright or up the stairs.
- Internal diagonal decides whether a three-seat sofa fits.
- Load capacity decides how many trips are needed, and that is billable time.
And some things simply do not go up in a lift: large sofas, single-piece dining tables, large-format artwork. Then the alternative is the stairs or an external hoist, and both cost money and have to be planned.
All of this is settled at the home survey. That is exactly what it is for.
Out to the interior, what changes
Outside the city the problem stops being the building and becomes access. Heading to Coclé, Chiriquí, Veraguas, Los Santos or Bocas you have to account for the last stretch: narrow streets, dirt roads and houses the large truck simply cannot reach.
When that happens the load is transferred to a smaller vehicle, and that is extra work which belongs in the quote from the start rather than appearing as a surprise halfway there.
The short list
Before fixing a date, you want:
- Permit and lift booking at the building you are leaving.
- The same at the building you are arriving at.
- A day and slot that both buildings authorise.
- Deposits paid, if they ask for them.
- Service lift measurements from both ends.
With that, a two-bedroom move is done in a morning. Without it, it gets done another day.
